Reframe & Reset Your Career Podcast

Episode 51. How Your Mindset And Beliefs Can Transform Your Career, Health & Life – David Robson

Want to know more about how your mindset and beliefs can transform many aspects of your life including career, fitness, managing stress and health? David Robson, the author of The Expectation Effect and the winner of the 2022 BPS Book Awards, discussed this and much more with me on Episode 51 of the Reframe & Reset Your Career podcast.

In this episode, we will learn about:

What is the nocebo effect and how it differs from the placebo effect?

Don’t underestimate the power of positive thinking,

Looking at the brain as a prediction machine,

Reframing stressful situations and focusing on the positive aspects,

Changing mindset is important but results can’t be achieved without preparation and effort,

Reminding yourself of the work that you’ve done may help prior to an event like an interview or presentation,

Finding opportunities to push yourself out of your comfort zone without taking on excessive risk, which helped David with his public speaking,

Celebrating your achievements can help reinforce your mindset, and

Is it possible to increase your willpower?

David is an award-winning science writer specialising in the extremes of the human brain, body and behaviour. His first book, The Intelligence Trap, was published in 2019, and received worldwide media attention.

After graduating with a degree in mathematics from Cambridge University, he worked as a features editor at New Scientist for five years, before moving to BBC Future, where he was a senior journalist for five years. His writing has also appeared in the Guardian, the Atlantic, Aeon, Men’s Health and many more outlets.

David and I spoke about reframing stress in a positive way and he told me “a much better way of dealing with stress and anxiety is to start asking yourself, why did we evolve to have the stress response … the answer is that actually these are just all signs of physiological changes that were meant to improve performance. Your heart is racing because it’s pumping lots of oxygenated blood around the body and especially to your brain, it’s powering your thinking … these are the benefits of anxiety and stress in the short term and what researchers have found is actually just educating people about that, it can help to improve their performance … they’re using the stress or the anxiety as a resource.”
